An Artist Statement

Curricula Vitae, consists of manipulated garments, oil and watercolour paintings, artist books, and a series of abstract compositions using simple found objects, line drawings, images and shapes. I tend to work mostly on paper and assemble my materials by sewing, paying tribute to traditional quilters. I like to use needles and thread as a drawing implement.

These compositions are like complex puzzles to me; they feel mathematical and systematic. I tend to go off the page, often with elements playfully hanging off the bottom, poking out the top, or falling forward into space. I like manipulating objects, while exploring their potential in two and three dimensions.

Curricula Vitae grew from an ongoing body of work titled Human Resources, which first debuted in the 2001 exhibit of the same name. Influenced heavily by studies of Martin Heidegger's "Standing Reserve" and Michel Foucault's "Discipline and Punish", this is a reflection on the social prevalence of seeing a life or a person as a resource - an object that must be extractable and profitable. I am fascinated by the overt ways this ideology trickles into education, parenting, and relationships and more profoundly into our own image of self.

Children are recurring subjects in my work. I am interested in socialization through education, media and consumerism. Childhood is seen as a transitional state, en route to adulthood and not as a valid state of its own. Neil Postman's "The Disappearance of Childhood" is a text I often return to. Branching from this, I work with themes around community, identity, children and war, personal histories, and notions of play.
